Who can be a Social Mentors for immigrant community engagement?

A Social Mentor can be an individual volunteer or a representative of an organisation with the relevant experience and a commitment to enhancing immigrant engagement. They may be native Norwegians or individuals with a immigrant background who have successfully integrated into the community. The key requirements include:

  1. Goodwill and commitment: A genuine desire to empower immigrants by fostering their active participation in social and political life.
  2. Alignment with core values: Respect, empathy, and inclusivity are the pillars of Social Mentorship. These values ensure a supportive and welcoming environment.

Activities of the Social Mentors

The activities of the Social Mentors focus on empowering immigrants to engage actively in their communities, both socially and politically. These activities include:

  1. Civic engagement support: Encouraging immigrants to participate in local events, community forums, and voting where applicable.
  2. Leadership building: Guiding immigrants to take active roles in community initiatives, organisations, or advocacy groups.
  3. Language and communication support: Facilitating language learning as a tool for effective participation in social and political discussions.
  4. Understanding rights and systems: Moving to a new country can be overwhelming. Social Mentors offer emotional support, helping immigrants cope with the stress and challenges of their new life.
  5. Networking and outreach: Connecting immigrants with local leaders, organisations, and networks that can amplify their voices.
